How to prepare for Quran recitation?
It is saveAdab(Etiquette) to be followed before reciting the Qur'an. This contains:
- Being in the state of wudhu (ablution).
- Be appropriately dressed
- Begin your recitation by doing ta'awwudz and saying the basmalah
For this reason, it is most convenient to read the Qur'an before or after your prayers when you are in the state of wudhu, appropriately dressed and in the right frame of mind to focus on your recitation and deepen your faith.
Also, when reading, your pace should be slow so that you can understand the meaning of the verses, rather than rushing them just to finish reading them. Leave any discussion of the verse itself for later, and remember to glorify Allah when you have finished reciting it. Begin your recitation with the right intention and resolve to begin the recitation with sincerity, clarity, determination and worship of Allah. ☺️
How can I finish the Quran in 30 days (or less)?
The Qur'an can be divided into 30 juz' of varying lengths and the most common method for a single reader is to read 1 juz' per day. Each Juz' is about 20 pages long, so you can spread it out throughout the day:
- Read 4 pages after each obligatory prayer
- Read 2 pages before each obligatory prayer and 2 pages after
- Read 5 pages each morning, noon, afternoon and evening
- Read 10 pages in the morning and 10 pages in the evening
These are some common strategies, but ultimately you should find one that fits your schedule! If you only have time at night or in the early hours of the morning, use that time to devote yourself to your recitation. It's also important to maintain a regular recitation routine, which will help you feel more confident and patient throughout the process.
If you know others around you who are interested in reciting the Quran in Ramadan, you can also recite the Juz' together! For example, in a household of 5, each member can recite 6 Juz' to complete all 30 within the month. This makes it easier for individuals and you can still get the rewards together! If you don't live in the same household, don't worry - why not take the time to organize an evening Zoom call or Google Hangout to start a Quran recitation group? ? You can even discuss the surah together after the recitation and deepen your knowledge in the group.
I haven't started yet, how can I catch up?
The first step is to set an intention and just start reading! It may be difficult at first, but if you keep putting it off out of fear, you'll never get around to starting. And before you know it, the month is over. So it's better to just start and do your best. ? Integrate reading of the Qur'an into your daily routine - read it before and after your prayers, read it during the terawih, and read it when you feel the urge to do so during the day.
If you can't shake the feeling that you won't make it on time, don't worry! It can feel like a daunting task, especially if your work hours are erratic or you just don't have enough free time to devote to the task. But every effort is recognized by Allah and even a little effort is better than none. ? While you may not finish it this Ramadan, if you force yourself to even start it will set an amazing precedent for years to come! Sometime in the future you can finish it within one Ramadan. It takes some people decades to achieve this, so all you can do is go at your own pace and do your best. There is no set pace that you have to follow at the end.
Can I still read the Koran during my menstruation?
That's a good question! Among the Shafi'iSectA general consensus is that Muslimahs must not hold, touch or carry a physical copy of the Qur'an during their tenure as they are considered to be in an impure state. In general, this also means that you cannot recite from the Quran during your period, which can be a major obstacle to completing the Quran in Ramadan. ?
Some women discover gaps, for example when using electronic versions of the Quran on websites or apps, when reciting from memory or when reading for tafsir purposes (e.g. attending a class). However, you may experience cramps or other symptoms during your period that make reciting uncomfortable or painful. You can still do itother services when you have your periodbut that can definitely feel like a major setback.
To compensate, try to squeeze in 1-2 extra Juz' on the weekends when you don't have your period, or add another 4-5 pages each time you recite. It definitely gets harder, but be kind to yourself and console yourself with the fact that if you don't engage in these actions, you're still obeying Allah's will. ? Regardless of whether you manage to complete the Quran in Ramadan or not, you can still get many blessings by reciting the holy book. Hopefully, with time, reciting the Qur'an can become a regular habit - and eventually we hope that you will manage to recite the book once or even twice in Ramadan!
